I like to buy new sunscreen at the beginning of every summer. I do try to keep the kids wearing it year round, but with most Michigan winters, not much skin is usually exposed for months on end. Now the longer days, I have to start worrying about the sun a bit more. If it wasn\u2019t bad enough that we have to worry about all the bad effects of the Sun, we also have to worry about the sunscreens we choose.<\/p>\n<p>Some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vvv.com\/healthnews\/dsunscre.html\" target=\"_blank\">doctors\/scientists<\/a> feel that the reason Skin Cancer has slowly been on the rise, has more to do with the chemicals in the sunscreen verses the sun. We all know that the sun is dangerous though, so we have to find safer alternatives to sunscreen. You want to look for <strong>titanium dioxide<\/strong>, <strong>zinc oxide<\/strong>, or <strong>talc<\/strong> that work by reflecting the UV radiation rather than by absorbing it. I have found this is harder then it sounds. Almost all sunscreens use many harmful chemicals that may generate free radicals in your body, along with many other bad side effects. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"bodytext\">Benzophenones (dixoybenzone, oxybenzone)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"bodytext\">PABA and PABA esters (ethyl dihydroxy propyl PAB, glyceryl PABA, p-aminobenzoic acid, padimate-O or octyl dimethyl PABA)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"bodytext\">Cinnamates (cinoxate, ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate, octocrylene, octyl methoxycinnamate)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"bodytext\">Salicylates (ethylhexyl salicylate, homosalate, octyl salicylate)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"bodytext\">Digalloyl trioleate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"bodytext\">Menthyl anthranilate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"bodytext\">Avobenzone [butyl-methyoxydibenzoylmethane; Parsol 1789] &#8211; This is the only chemical sunscreen currently allowed by the European Community. However, its safety is still questionable since it easily penetrates the skin and is a strong free radical generator.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmeticsdatabase.com\/browse.php?category=sunscreen%20spf%2015%20and%20above\" target=\"_blank\">Skin Deep<\/a> has a great resource for finding safe sunscreens. Out of all the sunscreens, it seems <strong>California Baby<\/strong> is one of the best choices. It\u2019s health hazard is 1 and the sun hazard is 0. It is is also one of the easier to find sunscreens. If you can\u2019t find it locally, you an purchase it on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Furl%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps%26field-keywords%3Dcalifornia%2Bbaby%26x%3D0%26y%3D0&amp;tag=scrapdesig-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">Amazon<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080531153554im_\/http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=scrapdesig-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> and even <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?type=4&amp;campid=5335830278&amp;toolid=10001&amp;customid=&amp;mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Fsofocus%3Dbs%26sbrftog%3D1%26dfsp%3D32%26from%3DR40%26satitle%3Dcalifornia%2Bbaby%2Bsunscreen%26sacat%3D-1%2526catref%253DC6%26sargn%3D-1%2526saslc%253D2%26sadis%3D200%26fpos%3D48047%26sabfmts%3D1%26saobfmts%3Dinsif%26ftrt%3D1%26ftrv%3D1%26saprclo%3D%26saprchi%3D%26fsop%3D32%2526fsoo%253D2\" target=\"_blank\">Ebay<\/a>. Last year on my quest for safer sunscreen, I cam across <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Furl%3Dsearch-alias%253Daps%26field-keywords%3Dbaby%2Bblanket%2Bsunscreen%26x%3D6%26y%3D21&amp;tag=scrapdesig-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">Baby Blanket<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080531153554im_\/http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=scrapdesig-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> brand which I purchased on <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?type=4&amp;campid=5335830278&amp;toolid=10001&amp;customid=&amp;mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%2Fsearch%2Fsearch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3Dbaby%2Bblanket%2Bsunscreen%26category0%3D\" target=\"_blank\">eBay<\/a>.\u00a0 I bought it because it was 50+ SPF, Broad Spectrum UVA\/UVB and it states Titanium Dioxide formula on the bottle.\u00a0 I was a bit upset when I received it and it also had Ethylhexyl p-Methoxycinnamate, 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate and Oxybenzone.\u00a0 I bought (2)\u00a0 12 oz bottles, so we did end up using it.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmeticsdatabase.com\/browse.php?sunscreens=1&amp;spf=&amp;brand_id=&amp;ai=&amp;query=baby+blanket\" target=\"_blank\">Skin Deep<\/a>, it rates a 3 in health hazard and a 1 in sun hazard, making it a rating of 2.\u00a0 Not as bad as I thought, but I am glad to have found this resource for my next purchase.\u00a0 My goal is to use a product that rates 1 or less.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a quick guide to knowing the terms of sunscreen ~<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SPF: Sun Protection Factor. A measure of how effectively the sunscreen blocks the sun\u2019s UVB rays. It\u2019s calculated by comparing the amount of time needed to produce a sunburn on protected skin to the amount of time needed to cause a sunburn on unprotected skin.<\/li>\n<li>UVB: Short-wave part of the spectrum of sunlight; more potent than UVA in causing sunburn, thought to be the main cause of basal and squamous cell skin cancers as well as a contributor to melanomas.<\/li>\n<li>UVA: Long-wave solar rays. Less likely than UVB to cause sunburn, but penetrates the skin more deeply; considered chief cause of wrinkling and \u201cphotoaging.\u201d Apparently increases UVB\u2019s cancer-causing effects, but may be main culprit of melanomas. Not blocked by all sunscreens, so check the label!!<\/li>\n<li>Sunscreen: Chemically absorbs UV rays.<\/li>\n<li>Sunblock: Physically deflects UV rays.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBroad-spectrum Protection\u201c: This indicates that a product protects against UVA and UVB, but doesn\u2019t guarantee coverage against all UVA wavelengths.
